A plateau is rarely an effort problem. It is almost always a distraction problem dressed up as one. On the latest episode of the Utah Business Spotlight Podcast I sat down with Jane Ann Craig, founder and CEO of Jane Ann Craig International, executive consultant, leadership coach, and author of The Audit Principle. The conversation was short, tight, and operator-grade, and the diagnosis Jane Ann Craig delivered is the one most Utah business owners have been quietly waiting for somebody to name out loud.

I am Peter Anthony, founder of The INCubator Marketing Agency. Jane Ann Craig is one of the gems of the Utah business world, and full disclosure, she is also one of my favorite mentors. The reason I built this episode of Utah Business Spotlight around Jane Ann Craig is structural: most operators I speak with across Utah are not failing for lack of effort. They are working harder than they ever have, putting in more hours than they ever have, spending more on tools than they ever have, and the company is sitting in the same spot it sat in eighteen months ago. That is the plateau. And until somebody helps the operator isolate what is actually causing it, no amount of additional effort will move the line.

The Real Obstacle Utah Operators Are Fighting Right Now Is Noise

I asked Jane Ann Craig the first big question I open most strategy conversations with: what is the toughest obstacle her business has had to overcome in the past few years? Her answer reframed the entire interview. The biggest obstacle right now is not interest rates, not labor, not AI disruption, not the economy. The biggest obstacle is the noise, specifically the cultural narrative being aimed at the next generation of operators that says, 'you cannot make it the way previous generations did, it is harder now.' Jane Ann Craig pushed back hard on that narrative, and Utah operators reading this article should push back on it just as hard.

There has never been a better time in history to start a business, build a brand, or chase a serious goal. The tools are more affordable. The resources are more accessible. Distribution is more democratic than at any point in the history of commerce. The narrative that says it is harder now is not a fact, it is the noise. And the operators who buy into the noise spend the next decade explaining why they did not build the company they were always capable of building. Jane Ann Craig's first job as a coach is to put that narrative back where it belongs.

"There has never been a better time in history to be going after any goal or dream or building a business. The tools and resources we need are so affordable and so accessible."

The Plateau Is a Distraction Problem, Not an Effort Problem

Once Jane Ann Craig named the noise, I pushed the diagnosis one layer deeper on camera. The reason most Utah operators are stuck on a plateau is not that they are not working hard enough, it is that they are working hard at the wrong things. They have plateaued because they no longer know how to navigate the new waters their company is sitting in. More effort applied in the wrong direction does not produce momentum. It produces exhaustion. Jane Ann Craig agreed instantly and acknowledged the language was sharper than her own framing, distraction is the more accurate word than noise.

This is the conversation almost no other coach in Utah is willing to have at this resolution. The plateau is not solved by a new tactic, a new ad platform, a new tool, or a new hire. The plateau is solved by an audit, naming the three specific distractions that are fragmenting the operator's attention and stalling the company. Jane Ann Craig's entire methodology, captured in her book The Audit Principle, is built around exactly that audit. You cannot fix what you have not named, and most Utah operators have never sat down with a strategist sharp enough to help them name it.

The Three Distractions Every Utah Operator Has to Name Out Loud

Jane Ann Craig and I went deep on this on the show. The work is to identify the three specific distractions slowing the company down, not generic ones like 'social media' or 'family responsibilities,' but the ones unique to that operator's life and business. Some operators are distracted by a constant stream of new opportunities they keep saying yes to. Some are distracted by team drama they should have delegated upward two years ago. Some are distracted by personal life events they have not properly compartmentalized. The distractions are different for every operator, but the discipline of naming them is universal.

The most insidious distraction at the CEO level is the comparison trap. Jane Ann Craig has overseen massive companies. I have overseen multiple businesses. We both see the same pattern in highly successful operators: once you reach a certain altitude, you start measuring yourself against fictitious competitors who are not even running in your race. You see a flashy LinkedIn announcement, a competitor's vanity metric, a story about a peer's exit, and you start questioning the trajectory of your own company. That comparison is the distraction. And that distraction is what fragments the attention that would otherwise compound into the next leg of growth.

Who Jane Ann Craig Loves Working With, And Why It Matters For Every Operator

I asked Jane Ann Craig directly: who do you love working with? Her answer was sharp. She loves serving operators who are hungry, motivated, and clear on their purpose. Operators who understand that success is not built on resistance, it is built on alignment. Operators who can write down a plan, start with the end in mind, and execute with purpose-driven discipline. Jane Ann Craig will tell you herself: the wrong-fit client wastes her time, the operator's money, and both parties' momentum. The right-fit client compounds.
