Build a Stronger Business | Market with Authenticity
Sarah Foley, The Vertical Blonde, built one of Utah's most magnetic speaker brands by refusing to dilute who she is. Here's the marketing infrastructure I see underneath it, and why it works.

Most operators in Utah are quietly editing themselves into invisibility. They tone down the brand. They soften the messaging. They water down the photo shoot. They take the meeting where someone tells them they're "too much" and they walk out smaller than they walked in. Then they wonder why their marketing isn't working. Sarah Foley, known across the speaking world as The Vertical Blonde, is the case study I keep coming back to when I want to show a Utah business owner exactly what happens when you stop doing that. I sat down with Sarah Foley on the latest episode of the Utah Business Spotlight Podcast, and what came out of the conversation is, in my opinion, one of the cleanest examples of authentic-brand-as-marketing-infrastructure I have ever recorded.
I'm Peter Anthony, founder of The INCubator Marketing Agency. I've spent more than three decades watching what separates the businesses that scale from the businesses that stall. The thesis hasn't changed: marketing isn't a service, it's infrastructure. Build it once, build it right, and it pays you forever. Sarah Foley is a textbook example of how that principle plays out when the founder refuses to outsource her own identity to the market.
The One Question That Decides Whether a Business Can Stay Authentic
The headline question of this article is the question every founder I work with is secretly asking: is it actually possible to build a stronger business and stay authentic? My answer, after 30+ years of building marketing systems for operators, is yes, but only if you understand what authenticity actually means in a marketing context. Authenticity is not a personality trait. Authenticity is an infrastructure decision. It is the decision to build every asset of your business, your brand, your photos, your offer, your stage presence, your message, around who you actually are, instead of around who you think the market wants you to be.
Sarah Foley made that decision on purpose, and she made it after the market punished her for it. That detail matters. The version of Sarah Foley that walks on stage today in pink is the version that got told, by serious corporate bookers, that she was "too glam" and "too risky" for their stages. She almost rebuilt her entire brand around that feedback. She got most of the way through new photos and a more buttoned-up image before she physically felt sick about it and pulled the plug. That moment is the entire turning point of her business.
"A strong message means nothing if the person delivering it doesn't feel believable."
That sentence, from Sarah Foley, is the principle every Utah business owner needs tattooed on the inside of their eyelids. Believability is not built by being polished. Believability is built by being congruent. The person on stage has to match the person on the website, the website has to match the person on Instagram, and the person on Instagram has to match the person who answers the phone. The moment any of those layers stops matching, trust breaks, and once trust breaks in a high-stakes purchase decision, no amount of marketing spend brings it back.
Why The Vertical Blonde Is a Marketing Case Study, Not Just a Speaker Brand
The name "Vertical Blonde" did not start as a brand. Sarah Foley told me on the show that it started as a private mantra she repeated to herself after an accident left her feeling everything opposite of powerful, strong, sexy, and beautiful. She used the name to remind herself who she still was. Years later, that private identity became a public brand. That sequence, internal identity first, external brand second, is the exact opposite of how 90% of the founders I meet build their companies.
Most operators reverse-engineer a brand from what they think will sell. Sarah Foley reverse-engineered a business from who she already was. The result is a brand that cannot be copied, cannot be commoditized, and cannot be diluted by a competitor, because the brand is her. From a marketing infrastructure standpoint, that is the most defensible moat a small business can build. Logos can be redesigned. Funnels can be cloned. A founder's lived identity cannot.
Why "Who You Are Not For" Is the Most Important Sentence in Your Marketing
On the show, I asked Sarah Foley a question I ask every founder I sit down with: who are you not for? Most operators flinch at that question. Sarah Foley answered it in one breath. The Icon Speaker Academy is not for dabblers. It is not for already-seasoned speakers. It is for the operator standing right at the precipice, someone ready to hit the ground running with a refined identity, a defined message, and clarity on what they actually believe.
"There is no greater power in business than saying no to the wrong money."
